WASHINGTON, DC – The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church has named MS. Eliza Love as the 2023 recipient of the $10,000 scholarship to attend the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Institute at Bossey in Switzerland.

COB Ecumenical Officer Bishop Sally Dyck made the announcement earlier this week. Ms. Love, a member of the Kentucky Annual Conference, is in the process of ordination and was recommended by her bishop, Bishop Leonard Fairley. She is a student at Duke Divinity School.

“Eliza demonstrates the spiritual maturity, personal discipline, and intellectual curiosity that make her an ideal candidate to study at Bossey,” said Duke Associate Dean for Academic and Vocational Formation Rev. David Emmanuel Goatley, adding, “My encounters with faculty and alumni of Bossey lead me to be convinced that this will be a very good experience for her theological education and vocational formation.”

The Ecumenical Institute at Bossey is located outside Geneva, Switzerland, and is connected both with the World Council of Churches and the University of Geneva. Every year the COB selects one student to represent The UMC in its Certificate in Ecumenical Studies program. It requires the student to live in Christian community at Bossey from late August through January of the following year with other representatives from around the world.

The studies include lectures, experiential formation, the writing of a thesis, and pilgrimage trips to the Vatican and to the WCC Interchurch Center. Recent recipients of this scholarship include Ericka Jallah from Liberia, Tavis Tinsley from Georgia, Hannah Andres from South Dakota, Rachel Callendar from New Jersey, Katye Chambers from Arkansas, and Daniel Reffner from Kansas.
