Council of Bishops Director of Communications Rev. Dr. Maidstone Mulenga was last night named Communicator of the Year for The United Methodist Church by the United Methodist Association of Communicators during a ceremony at McKendree United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee.
An ordained elder in the UMC, Mulenga manages and directs the internal and external communications of the council and oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy for the Council of Bishops.
Council of Bishops President Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey and President Designate Thomas Bickerton introduced Mulenga, lifting up his extraordinary work on behalf of the COB. “Maidstone is first and foremost a servant of God and a servant of the church,” Harvey said. “If you’re looking at a model of what it means to be the UMC, you’re looking at him.”
Bickerton said he can think of only one word to describe Mulenga’s service: exceptional. “You go the extra mile every day of the week,” Bickerton said.
Mulenga accepted the award with deep appreciation, noting he gives all glory and honor to God for the blessing to do work he considers a true pleasure. “Thank you very much for this honor,” Mulenga said. “I will treasure it.”
The Communicator of the Year is selected based on these criteria: active professional, currently serving in a communications role (at least three years of communication-related employment within the denomination); UMAC member (nominations are made by UMAC members for UMAC members); recent striking achievements in communication (i.e., previous/current year); broad impact of the contribution; and vision-thinking beyond the present/immediate demands of the job, one who is breaking new ground.
